If you understand that your piece is dirty and needs to be cleaned, just use a soft cloth or sponge, warm water and neutral detergent. If your piece has some detail or texture, you can replace the cloth or sponge with an equally soft toothbrush.
After dipping the cloth in the mixture of water and detergent, carefully and gently rub your piece in the direction of the grain of the steel, in order to prevent it from being scratched unnecessarily.
If your piece has some kind of stone, avoid rubbing that area.
